Every truly great coach knows it’s not how many games the team wins or how many points any one player scores, it’s how good the team feels about their efforts once the final whistle is blown. It’s about dedicating time to review and plan. It’s doing what you can to guide your team to successful results. Leadership, understanding and perseverance- these are the qualities great coaches value, exude and instill.
Jodie “Coach” Parrish understands. In fact, when former players are asked why they still call her “Coach” today, they respond by telling you she was much more than a great woman’s basketball coach here in Jackson. She was a person they could look to for advice, both on and off the court. “Whenever I have the chance to share my experience with people, in this case my players, I always give 110% in effort,” she says, “But the thing that pleased me more than any victory was the chance to be a positive role model.”While Jodie’s “Athletic Excellence” began in college, where she would earn the first MVP honors for a female athlete in Union University’s history, it’s safe to say she has taken the lifelong lessons regarding teamwork and commitment to a goal and has successfully applied them to her professional ambitions. For “#21”, a name which friends still call her, it all begins in the “APPROACH”. Whether it was helping students plan their college careers as a former university recruiter or as a coach, she listens to understand the goals people set and uses her expertise to make them a reality.
“Combine a will to succeed with dedication and commitment and any goal in life is possible”.
